    ok.
I have some questions concerning how the relationship works between me and wordpress and an existing site and the best way to learn it.

To start I want to use wp to design certain aspects of sites, i.e. a blog and cms system. I have created my friends site and used html/css. So I am hoping I can learn wp so I can offer my friend a blog and cms system etc. and anything else I cannot do with html/css.

So to do that whats the best thing to do.

Do I signup for wp and create a test blog and try and learn it that way?

    OR

Is that a waste of time and should I just use the domain mapping approach and learn it from that side of things. Although this is a paid option, maybe I don’t need this yet.

I can only assume that signing up and creating a test blog will only teach me so much but will not teach me how wp works when it’s on my own/clients servers and how php/mysql/databases work etc??

I’m trying to avoid doing step one but then finding out that step 2 would have taught me everything.

    Thanks

    Iso.

Install WordPress locally so you can play with, and break, as many installs as you want/need.

Signing up for a wordpress.com blog will help you learn how to blog with WP but you not have any editing access for themes etc. Nor will you be able to upload any plugins.

    Thanks.

So if I use the wp thats installed on my server and use that system to learn is all my testing/learning done using my php control panel set up with the host?

Since I am completely new to this I am having a hard time figuring out how to control things. Probably because I skipped learning php/mysql.

When I built my site I used html/css and direct access to my files on the server to modify things. With wp where will my controls be??

WordPress is a program based on php and best way to learn how to use wordpress is install locally as Esmi suggested and to that you will need to install a server on your computer like Wamp or easyphp if you using windows there are others Mamp for Mac and lamp for linux.

and install wordpress and work on wordpress as if you are working on a host server and there are tutorials on wordpress I have Video tutorials on my website click on my name and get your feet wet and then you will to start swimming in no time.

Thanks. I will take a look at your pages.

I presently have wp installed on a live server and access the page at my friends live site.

I figured out I can login by placing this at the end of the address:wp-login.php

I remember talking with the host co when they installed it for me and getting my password.

Is that control panel that I am looking for to LEARN the system in conjunction with the php control panel from the host co.?

If so is that ok to do? Are there any security risks with that?

Can I change my username from the default. I read it’s not safe to keep it the default username.

    Thanks
    iso.

You do not need to know php unless you want make some changes in the way wordpress forms pages.

As you know Html/CSS then you will not have that much problem working with themes.

In video tutorial I have on my website will teach how to use wordpress admin panel is like like using normal any program.

Host control panel is to manage host features and wordpress admin panel is to manage wordpress they two different things.
