Best Way To Import Custom Post Type

I want to change my theme from one that has built-in Custom Post Types to one that I can build a customized design on. However, I don’t want to lose my Custom Post Types.

Is there a clean way to import the content and the individual Custom Post Types? I see there are several plugins with import/export functions but various forum posts note some problems with these.
