• We run mainly a movie review site. Each review gets a Featured Image and a Slider Image. The Featured Image is the movie poster and we use that also in the post itself.

However, now I’m noticing a CRAZY amount of image data going on. For example, one movie review of Man of Steel somehow took the single movie poster and generated the following from it:

    man-of-steel-poster1.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-32×32.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-60×60.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-64×64.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-80×50.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-96×96.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-100×70.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-120×80.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-150×150.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-163×103.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-202×300.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-250×180.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-400×248.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-570×300.jpg
    man-of-steel-poster1-650×280.jpg

First, is there at least a tool to find out which of these is actually being used?

Second, our slider images only get used for the short (days) period when that post is in the most recent 5. After that, that image will never be seen again so having 16 copies of it forever seems crazy.

What can be done about all this?

I don’t know of a tool myself but you could try looking in your theme’s functions.php file to see if the theme had used add_image_size().
