Best way to create new WP site from a former category?

  • Hey everyone:

    I have a WordPress site with a few categories. Fortunately, one of them has become so popular the decision has been made to break it off into its own WP site on a separate subdomain.

    My question is, what’s the best way to do this?

    Having to take into account:
    * URL redirects from the old site just for those specific posts
    * moving the actual content
    * moving media (images)
    * transferring DISQUS comments over to new WP site
    * the new site will be built on the current latest version of WP instead of 3.7.1

    Can anyone share any experience? Step-by-step guides? Other things we may need to take into consideration other than those listed above?
