Best way to back up DB & build dev environment?

    I’d like to know the best way to create a daily back up of my wordpress db using a cron job.

    Also what is the best practice for creating a dev site? Can i connect another wordpress install to the same database or should the DB be entirely separate from production?

  • Since it will be a dev environment it’s probably best to separate the databases, this way if anything happens then you can just wipe the whole database no harm done. As for the cron job I don’t do much with the mysql client but I imagine with some googling you could find what you need.

    search for backup plugins – at least one of them has a setting for timing the backup.
