Best way to add columns

Hi,
Can anyone tell me the best way to add html table like columns to a page in a wordpress site? I have tried a couple of plugins but they are not doing the job. Is it possible to build a table in Dreamweaver and then copy the code onto the editor? I also need the columns to be different colors. Thanks.
