Best that I’ve tested

I’ve been testing all sorts of forum options for a small non-commercial website. The stand-alone software was generally full-featured but difficult to customize and couldn’t utilize the website’s existing layout and styling. Other WordPress plugins had various issues that ranged from too few options, usability issues, and inability to customize even the colors.
So I’ve come to the conclusion that wpForo is the best current WP forum software overall. Tons of options, fairly simple to customize colors and match the site, full control over layout with real categories and sub-forums, and a forum user login that can be made to feel separate from the site login while still utilizing the WP security features.
Furthermore, the wpForo staff reply quickly to questions in the support forum and are actively updating and maintaining the software.
