Best practices for email contact

I’m a new user of wordpress and just got my site set up. I’d like to find out what the best practice is on readers contacting you. Should I be using a contact form? Just display my email in a mailto? I’ve also seen a javascript app that displays your email as an image instead, should I use that?

I want to encourage people to email me, but I don’t want to be inundated with spam.
