• Hi All. .NET developer cutting my teeth in the WordPress realm and really enjoying it. I do have a best practice question, so apologies if this is not the best forum for such a question, but I’m getting conflicting answers from many that I have asked.

My question is really a matter of custom development vs. developing a child theme off of a pre-existing parent template. I’m curious as to what’s best earlier on when trying to make a name for yourself in the WP realm. When would you choose one over the other? Is it too subjective of a question to ask which is better/preferred way of doing things, or is it purely case-by-case?

From several blogs and articles that I have found recently, it seems to be the hot thing right now to find yourself a responsive parent and create a child of said parent.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/comments. Cheers.

  • I think that this is a question of preference.

Some people prefer the parent/child theme relationship, others (me) prefer custom theming.
I started building custom WordPress theme for clients in 2004 and since then I’ve built hundreds of them with a starter theme, that has had tweaks but it’s been the same for a long time.

I prefer custom theming, because I don’t like bloat. If I don’t need a blog or comments, I just don’t include those templates.

I’ve worked at an agency where they liked child themes and so had to go that route.

I don’t think that one route is better than another.
