Best Location For Custom Assets

  • Hello All,

    I am looking for advice as to the best location to place my asset directories within the file structure of a site.

    I am referring to custom images, fonts, scripts etc. I feel as if I want them in the root of the project a sopposed to the wp-content or theme / child theme folders for ease of backup and no risk of loosing during an updgrades to themes or wp itself.

    What are others doing / recommend and does wp have best practices regarding this matter?

  • Hi,

    Usually custom assets like this should be placed under the theme directory in use. WordPress will not remove any assets from these directories during upgrade. Note however that you should use a childtheme if you are using a theme that will get upgrades (ie. not a custom theme), such as the WordPress stock themes.
