Best current method for a sandbox/beta site

I am thinking of changing themes which means a significant change up in the way my content is created. With that in mind I would like to have a sandbox to develop in and then change over to the new site when complete.

Question is what is the preferred method? Install into a subdirectory and rewrite htaccess? A plugin I am unaware of that works well?
