• Hi,

    I intend to update a clients site from WP 2.8.5 to 3.1.2 as I need to create a user account for the new company that has taken over the old company site so that they can log on themselves and update the content.

    However, I am always a bit paranoid about updating to a new version of WP in case something goes wrong and I lose the site! This is probably an unnecessary worry, but I can’t help feeling that if something goes wrong I will have to do a lot of work to restore the original site.

    Can someone tell me what the best plugin is to use for this – one that works 100%. I’m on a Linux server. I need it to be bullet proof, easy to understand and use and I haven’t done this before. The basic idea is:

    1. download, decompress and upload plugin to site
    2. activate it
    3. backup the site to home computer
    4. upgrade WP to 3.1.2
    5. if something goes wrong re-install original version, otherwise continue

    Does that sound right? Sorry, I’m a WP newbie!

    Cheers

  • Don’t use a plugin!

    You will need to carry out a series of smaller, manual upgrades: 2.8.5 -> 2.9 -> 3.0.4 -> 3.1.2

    Before you start, backup your database, deactivate all plugins and switch to the default theme. Carry out separate backups after each & every upgrade step.

    Thanks esmi,

    …but, wow! What a palava to do all that! Are you sure there’s not an easier way? I’ve read on some of the plugins that they backup the database and the files – I’m just not sure how well they do it…

    If I don’t get any other replies to this post I will probably do as you suggest, but it just seems a little complex to do all that when a GOOD plugin might be available.

    Cheers,

    N

    The link esmi gives is good, it describes various methods which is why the article is so long, if you can use the phpmyadmin method for example it will take less than 10 minutes to start a backup using the guide, even if you haven’t used it before.
