Best approach to merge two WordPress sites (site and blog)?

  • I currently have two WordPress sites I am working with. One site is a static ‘page’ site for our company. The other site is a separate blog site for our company. The two are completely separate from each other outside of a link on our company site to the blog. We now want to merge the blog into our main site, but I am not sure how to approach this.

    My first idea is to simply create a new folder in the root called ‘blog’ and create/import the blog site into there as a standalone WordPress installation.

    My second idea is to do a full-blown import of the blog into our main site (since the main site only uses pages and the blog only uses posts). If we do this though we will lose all of the categories (as far as I can tell) for our posts. This is a problem since our blog has over 1,000 posts. I would also have to create some sort of a blog page that will list posts and mimic the layout of the current blog.

    The merge needs to be completed this weekend so I really appreciate any thoughts or other ideas you may have. Thanks!

  • This isn’t a Multisite question, so you’re in the wrong forum.

    That said, the Import tool will do what you want. Tools / Export from your blog site will include post categories in the export file along with all your content. Images and other uploaded files won’t be included in the file, but you’ll get a chance to upload them as an import option. Make sure to back everything up well first, just in case you don’t like the result for any reason.

    Thanks for the advice dgilmour. If I went that route would I still have to create some sort of custom blog page within the site to display that posts? Also, will doing the export/import retain all the categories associated with each post?
