After creating the actual child theme style.css file is it best to just copy all the text from the original and paste it into the child? So you can edit all changes directly in the child?

To me that would be better, even after a new WP version comes out you could print out the child and compare it to the updates parent to re-enter your changes if you have to. Is this an acceptable approach?

  • No -it makes it much harder to keep track of the changes you’ve made and it creates duplicate CSS code.

No – only new/custom CSS should go into the child’s style.css file.

Using a browser tool like Firebug will show you the relevant parent theme CSS code that you then COPY to the child theme style.css file and change there.
