Being carpet-bombed with spam comments

Is there a way to get rid of 6,000-plus spam comments short of manually marking them as spam 20 at a time?? If I cannot solve this problem, I will have to give up this project for which I had high hopes. I will do updates and change settings for comments, but first want to get rid of the unwanted comments.
