    Yes, “subscriber” works just fine.

    When I register it takes me to the WordPress Backend – is this correct?

    Yeah, it seems to be the default. I didn’t like it either, so I downloaded the Primary Redirect plugin. Worked like a charm! Hope this helps. ??
