Beginner Problems With Plugins-General Blog Setups
-
This is a LONG post, and might need to be moved to a different help department. The Forum rules said to be as detailed as possible. I DO mention problems with several plugins, but thought it was better to lump them all together here, rather than separate posts for each, as I have possibly overlapping problems with each. Thank you in advance for reading and helping.
I’m semi-new to creating www.remarpro.com Blogs. Starting a new one, a Halloween themed affiliate blog, and I’m having problems with several plugins: “Web4pro AboutMe”, “WP 3 Total Cache”, “WP Touch”, “Tiny MCE”, WP Socializer”,”Marathon” and “Shareaholic”. At this moment, the blog is in “Coming Soon Mode” so you may not be able to see it.
Each of those plugins are causing (or might cause) frustration for me. The main one, for the moment, is “Web4pro About Me”.
I’ve searched for Easy and current, Word Press “About Me” plugins for the upper right sidebar of my home page, and possibly the other pages, too. Settled on Web4pro About Me. (If you know of a better/easier one, please let me know. I don’t think I found even one reccomendation for ANY “about me” plugin, via several google searches and reading a few tech blogs.)
I can NOT get my picture uploaded. I have NO idea WHAT to do, and/or What I’m doing wrong, and/or How to fix it.
It’s active on my blog, I’ve placed the plugin in a widget on the upper right sidebar. I can get some text visible, but not my picture. The plugin says to “fill in the starred” blanks, but I’m not sure IF any are starred, (the “stars” aren’t very visible, and my eyesight is a little limited), or what information to insert.
I’ve uploaded my desired picture from my computer, and through Canva. Both uploads made it into my Media page, (2 or 3 copies from each source, the Canva ones have both .png and .jpg extensions, can’t remember what they are from my computer.), but I can’t get any of them to work in this plug in.
I HAVE tried inputting information in the “blank fields”, (Alt text for the pic, and the link to the pic), but the black spaces aren’t clearly labeled as to what SHOULD be entered on each line. This “form” is acting like a “pop-up” to me: it is enlarged, providing the places for me to put in my info, and it has one instruction “Insert into Post”, and in another place, some variation of “Save Now”/ “Save Your Changes”. Clicking on either instruction does NOTHING!
I do have two or three other “About Me” plugins installed, (I know, too many), but I can’t get any of them to work, either.
Am I supposed to put the “About Me” picture into a Post, copy that, and then stick THAT into the widget? I’ve seen training videos that encourage that option, but I was under the impression, generally, that a photo, and/or affiiate link, “could” go straight into any text widget, and work fine that way. Is that correct?
I’ve tried the uploads on Chrome and the Newest IE. Neither work. My Header Graphic IS there, as are my page colors and beginning formatting. But no pic of me! I have a few other Halloween related pictures in my Media file, but haven’t tried uploading any of them, yet, because they aren’t “me”.
re the “web4pro About Me” plug in, it offers the option of using the various social icons to use, but I haven’t even begun setting those up.
Regarding my problem with W3 Total Cache: I installed it, was faced with a MAZE of settings to choose, possibly clicked on one/changed it somehow, and now, all of a sudden, I’ve been redirected to a third party company, “New Relic”, which offers super-indepth services to far bigger and more tech saavy companies than me. I don’t need their services, but WP 3 Total Cache keeps listing the things I didn’t get resolved with/for/through that other company. I’ve de-activated W3, deleted it, reinstalled it, and that message is still there.
How do I Fix this? What are the settings I need to fill in/agree to, on the rest of the W3 setup?
The other plugins:
I’ve had so much trouble with the above two, I haven’t done much with the others I mentioned, but I do have questions:
I’ve chosen a free, responsive, theme, (Spacious). WP Mobile and WP Touch have been suggested to me, but if my theme is “responsive” do I need to use either? Any conflicts between the the responsive them and these two plugins? Do either have difficult installations? One tech blog suggested adding “Touch” or “Mobile” (can’t remember which) helps do more things for mobile, even with a responsive theme, but that post may have been back in 2014. Still true?
Similar question re Shareaholic, WP Socializer, and Marathon. I’ve got Shareaholic installed, can’t remember about WP Socializer, and just heard about Marathon— it’s the “new big thing”. ?? Are they the same/overlapping/ can be used together? Which one is better?
And finally, for now, (lol), TinyMCE and it’s umpteen hundred additional plugins! Which one do I choose/use? Again, someone recommended it, to help make my blog(s) “pretty”/”useful”/ “easier”, etc. So, I go to upload it, and I discover SEVERAL options. No clue which to use, or what to do with it once installed. I have TinyMCETemplates installed, but have just barely looked at it.
I NEED to get this blog active, way before Halloween, and these set up issues are a HUGE distraction!
Again, thank you for whoever helps, and offers their time to help me solve my problems.
