Before I install…

Hi folks,

Newbie here. Computer literate. Read a LOT but not all of the documentation and did a search before posting, but didn’t find enough just yet.

Big question is:

I have an HTML website. I have a domain. My host (HostMonster) offers a Cpanel install of WordPress.

What I want to do is maintain my existing web site until after I have installed WordPress and template, created content and I’m ready to go live. Then I’d like to archive my existing site and go live with WordPress.

I’m not sure if that means moving all I have created in WordPress to root or simply changing the index.html in root to point to the WordPress install. I have read that a number of things can break from moving xyz.com/blog to xyx.com, so before I invest a great deal of time, thought I would ask the experts.
