:before :after questions

I was wondering about the :before and :after selectors and how they could be used to insert a image on the top border of a div so that i can still use one image as the background of the div. Basicly i want a smooth edge to my content, but in order to do this i would have to make images of a specific size and that would wreck the liquid layout i currently have.
