Plugin works as expected and in general is a great idea! It however needs more attention to the exception handling (e.g. pop-up screen disabled) and interface that would in a more explicit way warn the user about the consequences of using “import All” option (e.g. that it will replace site url and deactivate all themes if the theme is not installed in the importing site). Author mentioned about pop-up window, but in our case it looks like the pop up did not show (maybe due to the use of pop-up blocking software), so our tester did not see the pop-up after choosing “All” option.
One way to address this, would be to create a special choice (separate from “All”) to import exporting site url options E.g. have two choices: “All with changing siteurl” and “All without changing siteurl” or simply make a choice of changing siteurl a separate option highlighted in red with a note about consequences.
Thank you for your good work and suggestions, we wish you success, Matt!

Also, we wish to highlight great support for the plugin by Matt, who immediately contacted our representative with offer to help and sent further clarifications.
As soon as the future version of the plugin in some way address the issue we mentioned, we will be willing to give the plugin 5 star rating.

    Hi ip11166,
I’m so sorry you had a bad experience! I’d love to hear more about what happened to help track down any bugs that might exist. Did you receive any errors? What exactly became inaccessible? The plugin doesn’t make any changes to the exporting site, so that one is the most interest to me. Any additional information you can provide would be great.

    Thanks,
    Matt

We have checked and discovered that the exporting site stopped working because of the problem with the host not because of the plugin. So we apologize for this.

It did however changed the importing site https://moneytram.com so that it became inaccessible and when entered admin panel redirected to the exporting site – https://webdesignartshop.com.

When we checked the database table ‘options” it appeared that plugin changed 5 records including ‘siteurl’ record replacing original importing site URL to the new exporting site URL. Additionally, if your exporting site has a theme or plugins that are missing in the importing site, this could cause additional problems, and you will need to add them manually and add and activate the missing theme.

Overall, idea of the plugin is great it only needs more work before can become really useful. We would suggest that you look into an option of automatically installing all the theme and plugins that are referred to in the exporting site options. This would make your plugin a real killer for those who want to easily replicate many sites from one template. Because what is here in the market (e.g. Duplicator) does not do work 100% bug free.
Thanks again and wishing you success!

P.S. we are willing to change the rating for the plugin and to increase it a bit, since we believe that the idea is great and needs support.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but that is the expected behavior. Sometimes you do want to import the URL, and that’s why the plugin has options to do so. When you import the options file, by default, it will not import any options which may adversely affect a site (like the site’s URL, setting the theme, setting active plugins, etc.). In order to do that, you have to consciously choose to do so. There are two ways to choose to import those options, changing the default behavior:

    1. You can choose to import “All options”. If you choose this, and you’re also choosing to override existing options, a warning pops up which specifically says that you will be overwriting the URL and instructs you to proceed if this is what you intend to do. (Here’s a screenshot of what that looks like, for others who read this review).
    2. You have to manually select that you want to import the site url.

In both cases, changing the url is very much an opt-in process.

That’s not the purpose of this plugin; this is not a one-stop-shop site replicator, it’s an options exporter/importer. It fills a very specific need, and does so in a very safe and transparent way. For a full-featured tool, you should check out Dictator by Daniel Bacchuber.

P.S. we are willing to change the rating for the plugin and to increase it a bit, since we believe that the idea is great and needs support.

Thanks, I would really appreciate it if you would increase the rating! I put a lot of hard work into this tool and I’m quite proud of it.

Sorry if my phrasing made that confusing. The message isn’t a popup — it’s just a message (you can see it in the screencap in my last message), so it cannot be blocked. You said that your “tester” didn’t see it, so I’m to assume you didn’t do this import yourself? If that’s the case, I would recommend trying it yourself (you can get to this stage without changing anything, just don’t click “Import selected options.” If the message doesn’t appear for you too, I’d be very interested to know more about why that is so that doesn’t happen to other users! The message is very clear, but if there was an error that prevented it from showing, it doesn’t much matter how clear it is :-).

    Hi Matt,

Thanks for clarification! I will personally take a look in the whole process step by step and will let you know what can be improved (if any). To me, if someone missed such an important warning means that it is not so explicit and there is a way to improve and safeguard the whole process. I will check this and let you know my opinion.
