Hi, We noticed that a review is counted in the review summary only when a star has been selected.
So text review can be left but is not counted in the summary unless a star is selected.
Is my observation correct and is this “as designed” functionality?
    Is this not confusing?

Is there a reason why you do not want to make the rating field required?

    Yes this is intended behaviour.

The summary is the average rating score of all submitted reviews. If a review has no rating, it shouldn’t be included in the rating average (since no rating was given).

Hi sure I got that. Thing is that the message states:
3.5 out of 5 stars (based on 2 reviews)
Now we consider a written text as a review and the star(s) is (are) a rating.

So 4 reviews with 2 reviews containing a rating > 0 resulted in
3.5 out of 5 stars (based on 2 reviews) …

Eventhough there are 4 reviews and not 2.
Maybe we are a bit too picky?

Ah I just noticed your rating required note: I have not seen that it is a param that can be set….
    Where can this be set?
    Thanks for signalling this..

You can set which fields are required in the Settings.

So 4 reviews with 2 reviews containing a rating > 0 resulted in
3.5 out of 5 stars (based on 2 reviews) …

If the 0-star ratings were included in the summary average, the rating number would then be based on your 4 reviews, but the average rating value would go down.

    re required:
Rating field is ticked but still I am able to approve with 0-star ratings.

    re summary:
    sure… What about:

3.5 out of 5 stars (based on 4 reviews and 2 ratings)

    or may be better:

    Average rating 3.5

The visitors can see the rating consists of 5 stars anyway.
The question is what is more important to the visitor, the Average rating number or the data used to compose the Average rating number.

In any case, is it possible to customise this text? I can then leave it up to the customer how it will be presented.

You can create reviews on the admin side with zero stars, but reviews given with the review form on the frontend can only be submitted with a rating if it is set as required.

You can either use the “text” option on the shortcode, or you can change it globally on the Translations setting page.

Please read over the Shortcodes help page to learn about the available options.
