After I have read all the support requests about banner not showing without finding any applicable solution, I have to post another request on this topic.

I cannot see the banner neither as a preview while styling it, nor on my site itself no matter if I am logged in or not. By the way: I did NOT activate the Do Not Track (DNT) ability what could be a possible obstacle to see the banner. The very interesting fact is that I had the possibility to open my site with a very old version of Firefox in which DNT is not active as default. Even there: no banner!

So please, what can I do to make my banner appearing?

    Thank you for your help!

    Hi @setzfehler,

    I see these errors (403) in the console;
Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 403 ()
    font.css:1 (Other resource)
Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 403 ()
    banner-1-optin.css:1 (Complianz)

This 403 error means that something is blocking these resources, it can be a firewall that blocks the uploads folder. Or the uploads folder, where both files above are stored is not readable.

Do you know if a limitation is set on the uploads folder, or could you check if the uploads folder is writable and/or readable? Some more information can be found here; https://www.malcare.com/blog/wordpress-file-permissions/

Let me know if I can clarify anything. regards Aert

Hi Aert (sounds Nederlands of Vlaams),

    Thank you for your answer.

The first file you mentioned (it was created by Local Google Fonts plugin) is under access code 755 which means that it is readable ans writeable, the second was under another code but I changed it to 755, too. After doing that, I cleared browser cache. No change, still no banner.

    Best regards,

    Ronald

PS: Me, I am not using any firewall that could block access, and even after de-activating Really Simple SSL plugin which is also hardening the site no positive change.

    Hi @setzfehler,

As Aert mentioned, a “403 Forbidden” status code appears when trying to open these CSS files. This happens both with Complianz’s banner CSS file (banner-1-optin.css), but also with a CSS file from Local Google Fonts (font.css).

If you visit the URLs of these files in your own browser, you will find that it returns the following message:

If the above is not the result of a firewall/security tool, and as the 403 Forbidden error seems to occur on any files in the /wp-content/uploads/ folder: I would start by checking the permissions of the /uploads/ folder specifically.

Alternatively, you could consult with your hosting provider regarding this behavior, so they can take a closer look at your configuration.

    Kind regards, Jarno

    Hi Jarno,

As I mentioned before, I changed some file permissions, and WordPress site health status (Website-Zustand) doesn’t show any errors (Beschreibbar = writable):

    Das Hauptverzeichnis von WordPress
    Beschreibbar

    Das ?wp-content“-Verzeichnis
    Beschreibbar

    Das Uploads-Verzeichnis
    Beschreibbar

    Das Plugins-Verzeichnis
    Beschreibbar

    Das Themes-Verzeichnis
    Beschreibbar

    Das Must-Use-Plugins-Verzeichnis
    Beschreibbar

    Regards,

    Ronald

PS: This might not have to do with Complianz but since two days CSS shows a strange behavior: fonts and style are not loaded immediately as before, and I don’t have any countable visits to my site. Could it be that Complianz is blocking statistics and messing up Local Google Fonts?

    Hi @setzfehler,

I see that Complianz is currently disabled, but that the issue with the Local Google Fonts persisted; so I would indeed expect that to be unrelated to Complianz.

I suspect that when you navigate to the /wp-content/uploads/complianz/css/ folder on your site, the banner-1-optin.css may already be present there, but that the server responds with a 403 Forbidden when the file is being opened (which also seems to occur with a CSS file from Local Google Fonts, and that would explain the behavior you described whereby these fonts are not loaded).

You could contact your hosting provider for a closer look; they have both the tools and access required to thoroughly check the server setup/settings.

    Kind regards, Jarno

    Hi again Jarno,

    Thank you for your message!

Yes, I was disabling Complianz temporarily because I wanted to find out if there is a connection between the issues about missing, respectively not visible traffic, and the styling of the site. I am now able to answer that with partly yes. After disabling Complianz, stats are again showed on the site and in WP dashboard! Anyway, this behavior was somehow strange because it occurred primarily after Complianz was already in use for about a week!

Those styling and CSS issues are still happening, but the interesting thing is that this issue occurred about the same time!

Some time ago, I had issues with another plugin (Jetpack). After I had to delete and install it again, I was simply not able to configure it for new. Their support also detected many 403 errors, so I was contacting my hosting provider. First: They did not detect any server side errors but secondly they said that they are not responsible for issues with plugins or themes. After weeks (!) of message exchange, I detected the error myself: it was a conflict with another plugin! After disabling every plugin manually (not via the WP Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin which occurred as totally useless in that case!), everything worked fine again. I am very much afraid that this could also cause this issue.

In the meantime, I checked the permissions again and compared them with the ones on another site of mine without any issues: no difference!

But I also deleted Complianz at all to try another compliance plugin (about plugin try number eight) which is more complicated to configure but at least showing previews. Due to this, you might mark this thread as resolved.

    Best regards,

    Ronald
