Does anyone know how podcasts consume bandwidth from one’s webhost? We have a 120GB limit on our webhost bandwidth, and we usually go over the limit every month. In investigating why, I found out our podcast feed page seems to be one of the main bandwidth consumers. Our podcast episodes on average are 75MB in size, and the majority of our listeners don’t download the episodes (maybe 1 or 2 per episode). We also host our videos on Amazon S3 servers.

Hi there. To calculate the bandwidth you would just need to multiply the file size by the # of listeners you have. If you have 1000 listeners for your show that would be 75,000 MB or 75 GB. 100 listeners would be 7.5 GB, etc.

So you have a few options:
    1. Get a dedicated media hosting platform – these are designed specifically to delivery those podcast media files, and alleviate this concern of your web host’s limits
    2. Mix your files at a different rate – 75MB seems like a pretty large file. How long are your episodes? At 128kbps your file should be about 1MB/Minute – sampling at a lower rate like 96kbps would lower this file size and is still perfectly fine for almost all podcasts.

    Hope that helps.
