• When WordPress 5.4 came out, I used it a little on someone else’s site and was so baffled by it that I quit using that site and vowed never to upgrade my own WordPress sites.

Unfortunately, today I had to update one of them in order to make a new plugin work, and now I’m struggling to do things I routinely did in 5.3.

I publish a weekly quiz on my site. What I would always do was to copy the HTML of the previous post, paste it into a new post, and make changes to it. I can’t figure out how to do that in a way that doesn’t look alien to me so that I feel like I must have done it wrong.

I tried pasting from the text view rather than the HTML view, but the sizes of my text changed.

I tried using “Duplicate” but nothing appeared to happen.

What’s the best way to make a copy of a previous post?? And what’s a good site to look up basics of 5.4 for someone who sorely misses 5.3?

Moved to Fixing WordPress as this is not an Everything else WordPress topic. I also adjusted the topic title as it was a little click baity.

Without some more explicit steps for what you did or if your problem is limited to post or quiz (are you using a quiz plugin?) it’s a little difficult to narrow that down.

What troubleshooting steps have you tried? And duplicate how?

OK, sorry, this topic upsets me so it was all I could do to not simply blow off steam in that post.

Thanks for recategorizing. I wasn’t sure if “fixing” was appropriate, because my question is more about “understanding” – presumably, WordPress is working as designed, I just don’t understand this version.

Actually, I just discovered that I had a plugin that allowed me to use the classic editor, and I just needed to update it! So I have a way to do things in the way I’m used to. Still, as I’m probably going to have to grit my teeth and deal with blocks sooner or later, I’ll go ahead and describe my problem.

I’m using the plugin WPForms for this. The form is for users to try to translate a sentence. Usually from Japanese to English, but sometimes the reverse. After they enter their text in a field, when they submit they see what the correct answer is. You can see some here:

As I said, my normal procedure for putting up a new quiz post has been to simply copy the HTML for the post into a new post and then make changes to it – the new sentence to be translated, the new WPForms code, etc.

I tried copying HTML to a new post, and got what looked like a mess to me:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/aacax19z2rezcyu/Screen%20Shot%202020-07-16%20at%209.11.25.png?dl=0

In the preview it didn’t look quite as bad, but the instructions have become much bigger than the sentence to be translated, which should be the focus. Also, the post has been broken into blocks. Does that mean it’ll be impossible to copy the HTML for the entire post next time around? Is there some other way I can make a duplicate of this post — kind of a “Save as…” feature? (I figured out that “Duplicate” simply duplicates all the text/code within one post so that you have the entire thing twice in one post. Not useful for what I’m trying to do.)
