Badge Crons

How do badges get assigned automatically to a user? For example, if I create a badge that should be assigned to a user with 10 posts in bbPress, does this check periodically (maybe using WP Cron?) or do I have to go in every day and manually click “Assign”?

I’d like it so that when I user adds their 10th posts, on the next page load or whatever they get the badge assigned to them.
