I feel I need to make a quick comment regarding the number of bad reviews WP Edit has been receiving.

The top reason for negative reviews seems to be centered around Ultimate Tinymce:

    • Removed Functionality.
    • Reduced Features.
    • It’s not Ultimate Tinymce.

This plugin is NOT Ultimate Tinymce
While it is true this plugin is the successor of Ultimate Tinymce; it is still a COMPLETELY different plugin. It should not be “compared” to Ultimate Tinymce. Too much has changed.

If anyone knows WP Edit is not Ultimate Tinymce… it’s me. Trust me! Think about it…

I could not convert Ultimate Tinymce to WordPress version 3.9. I had included too much open-source software.. (youtube, code magic, color selectors) that broke after the update to TinyMCE4. Since so much broke… I decided to write a completely new plugin.

    Factors Beyond by Control
I’m truly sorry the updates to WordPress and TinyMCE4 completely changed the framework on which the code is written. I have absolutely no control over these variables. The only thing I can do is adapt.

What Happened to the other Buttons
WordPress adds about 10 buttons in a default installation. Another 10 or so can be found when clicking the Toggle Toolbars button. These include buttons like “bold, italic, link, etc.”.

Futhermore, there are about 20 additional buttons available with TinyMCE that are not enabled, by default, in a WordPress installation. You can add more of these buttons with simple WordPress hooks and filters. These buttons include “subscript, superscript, media, anchor, html, etc.”.

Now, the buttons like “YouTube, Code Magic, Advanced Color Picker, etc.” were third-party open-source coded buttons. There are currently NO updated versions of these buttons. So I have taken on the extremely challenging task of re-coding all these very popular addons for the updated versions of WordPress and TinyMCE4.

This is the reason some of the buttons are only available in WP Edit Pro.

Look More Closely at Negative Reviews
Most all of these reviews are describing the relationship to Ultimate Tinymce. Again, this plugin is NOT Ultimate Tinymce.

I would MUCH prefer to read negative reviews regarding the actual features of WP Edit… not Ultimate Tinymce. That would be the kind of feedback which would be conducive to the future of WP Edit.

    I understand
I know, as well as anyone, what it feels like when a website quits working properly. It is a horrible feeling; ridden with fear and panic. This is why I respond to EVERY SINGLE comment/review… with a helping hand.

    Closing
This is not an attempt to prevent negative reviews. Let me clear that up right away. I typically get very valuable feedback from negative reviews.

However, 90% of these negative reviews are aimed at Ultimate Tinymce. It is simply unfair to users who are new to WP Edit looking for objective feedback to be “consumed” with Ultimate Tinymce.

    Thank you for reading!

  • I’m with ya on that Josh.

    Spot on Josh!
WP Edit is much appreciated as an alternative when Ultimate Tiny MCE was obsoleted through no fault of your own. I for one am very grateful that you put the effort into creating a free version that improves over the WP default.
What do they call us now? the Flex generation! It’s not an age demographic, but an attitude: Adapt or get left behind!

    Thanks guys.
I was frustrated.. and probably should not have created this thread… oops.

However, I feel the point is still valid.

Josh, it’s totally okay to be frustrated. I read through some of the reviews when we were looking for a new plugin to use, and I felt pretty bad for you. Eventually folks will get over it and move on, so hang in there!

    Thanks @ancawonka ??
I do appreciate your very kind words.

Want to toss in this two cents…

Any user that downloads a free plugin and then feels entitled to trash the plugin author for something that doesn’t work in a manner that exactly matches their expectations, have a nice long read with a your favorite beverage –

    Thanks @dlmweb.

Excellent read. The author (you?) made some very valid points. I love the ‘imagine this’ scenario ??

I really wish we could throw numbers around; but I’m always careful. Let’s put it this way…

    1. There are approx. 500 coding hours (so far) in the development of WP Edit.
    2. The one donation I have received thus far for WP Edit; bought me a single starbucks coffee (thank you kindly; you know who you are ??

It is a very, very difficult fence to remain balanced upon. And the really terrible part is when I go back to add new code to WP Edit and I think to myself, “Is this really worth the effort?”.

Here is another “morality” question, I’d like to ask any “number 3 people” from your article:
    1. Say you work a 40 hour a week job.
    2. Now, reduce that to half. Only working (and being payed) for 20 hours a week.
    3. Take the other 20 hours and spend them doing something free; which you receive no compensation.

So, you’re reducing your income by half.. and spending it doing something nice for a free community. You have lost half of your income; but you’re performing a (sometimes) respected public service.

How many people would make that transition?
