I oversee a number of sites for myself and for clients (around 250) I’ve been trying to use wp-smush it on a few of the sites that are image intensive, with varied results. They’re all on the same hosting. Most of them I can smush at least a few graphics, but I’ve got two that give “bad response from smush-it” every single time. This is the case whether I try to bulk smush or manually one at a time. None of the images are over 1mb. In fact, for one of the sites, I have an exact clone that’s targeted to a different country (located on the same server) and THOSE images smush just fine – and they’re the same images!

Can we get some insight on what circumstances cause this “bad response from smush-it” error message? I’ve been trying almost every day for three weeks now, and these sites just will not smush.

FWIW, other plugins on the same site(s) are Yoast SEO, W3 Total Cache, Cart66, Gravity Forms among others.

  • @netmeg,

On one of the bad sites can you please enable debug mode? Go to Settings > Media. On that Media page you should see the Smush.it settings and the checkbox to enable debug mode. Once enabled go to the Media > Library. Set the checkbox in the first column for one of the unprocessed images. Then from the drop down at the top of the listing (the action menu) select Bulk Smush.it. This will process the one image and hopefully report some debug information.

Please post that back here and we will try and help you interpret the issue.

Also, is there anything non-standard about the setup on either site? By non-standard I mean in a default WordPress install the images are stored into wp-content/uploads/ off the site root. Just need to know if you are using an alternate configuration attempting to hide the image in a non-standard path.

Also, how the plugin works is the URL to the image is passed to the Smush.it API. So the image needs to be accessible by public URL. The Smush.it service does not support HTTPS/SSL URLs. So if you have any special rewrite rules or such this might be the issue.

    Thanks.

Ok, if it doesn’t support SSL URLs than that’s probably it (although it worked on the Canadian site which is also SSL)

I’ve since found another plugin that does work, so I’ll go ahead with that. Thanks for your time.

    Hi there @netmeg,

Hope your well today and thanks for the update, sorry this didn’t work out for you, due to the SSL issue ??

If we can be of any assistance please don’t hesitate to ask.

    Kind Regards
    Jack.
