Just wanted to drop a note to let you know that, although it’s a great feature that you tell us that a plugin is not installed and has left tables/records behind, it can serve up false positives. This could happen if a plugin is absorbed into another plugin or the plugin is renamed.

I deleted records that were “not installed” and broke my site. Luckily I have a good backup software that will allow me to restore quickly but not everyone does.

I think you need to revisit this feature. I don’t know who to fix this sans keeping a database of plugin activity from other developers or reported by users but if it’s not reliable then maybe the feature needs to go away.

  • Hi Patrick,

Thank you for your report, and sorry for the inconvenience.

The list of tables and plugins currently only contains plugins from the www.remarpro.com repository, as we can’t collect information about other third party repositories and premium plugins.

But we are looking at ways to improve the feature and make it safer.

    Best wishes,
    Marc

I appreciate you looking into it. An example that I think will come up a lot are ones where there is a free plugin and you decide to go Pro and it requires you to keep the free plugin installed. I’ve seen this with:
    Elementor
    Many Elementor add-ons
    SEO Press

Conversely, there are developers that actually have you uninstall the free version and install the pro instead of it like iThemes Security. iThemes Security acquired Better WP Security and I suspect they weren’t diligent enough with the renaming of all the tables.

It creates a challenge for you guys but real anxiety for the rest of us who are getting false positives. If it’s not reliable then is it doing your users a disservice?
