• I’ve tried all the settings for email, SMTP – my local server and Gmail, server settings, etc – and I can’t get it to work.

It was working, but I had to uninstall some antispam/AV software from the server since it was creating too much load…but this was bouncing before that.

All other things work, Contact7 form works, as does Configure SMTP plugins, emails from WP/wordfence/comments, and my usual day-to-day email client. I have Monit and other things set to send to GMail and they work fine too.

Any ideas? It’s rather infuriating for it to try and backup then complain about Swiftmail?

But switching to localhost or my mail SMTP address doesn’t seem to work either – Test Email just spins. Very unhelpful.

Your post wasn’t deleted, it was in the spam queue. I’ve released this posy and deleted that duplicate that you created.

Swift Mailer: Connection could not be established with host smtp.gmail.com

I’m not familiar with Swift Mailer but which SMTP plugin have you tried?

It’s called ‘Configure SMTP’ – Contact7 seems to need it, but this problem started with bouncing while actually it wasn’t activated…

    https://coffee2code.com/wp-plugins/configure-smtp/

I’ve tried my local SMTP settings, localhost and the full URL with a similar issue:

[27-Mar-2014 23:33:19] ERROR: Swift Mailer: Expected response code 220 but got code “”, with message “+OK Hello there. ” [27-Mar-2014 23:33:19] Email sent. Not sure what SwiftMailer is, nothing I knowingly have installed on the server?

I’ve just tried it with ‘Server settings’ instead and now it magically works…odd. Not sure why SMTP didn’t work though, it seems to be running through my server now, but not bouncing back from Gmail? Glad it’s working, but no idea why SMTP wouldn’t work, when other applications and plugins happily use it.

It wouldn’t send a test email on any setting, including ‘Server settings’ before though…

Which at this point I sincerely suggest you do not make any more SMTP changes. ??

I do suggest that you make sure the other mail such as Contact Form 7 works but I don’t see any reasons why it wouldn’t.

Swiftmailer https://swiftmailer.org/ will be used in Backwpup on sending Backup archive with email. SwiftMailer can send big emails with low memory usage. With setting did you use in BAckupup for sending backups with mail ? Did you have enterd all Setting or USer the function to get configured settings from WordPress?

Now that’s interesting. Will the plugin use it’s Swiftmailer and ignore any SMTP plugins? I’d imagine that it would…

I was setting my SMTP settings to use GMail’s SMTP for years without problem, then when there was a problem (possibly partly something to do with GMail wrongly thinking my domain was spam) I switched to my local SMTP server – that’s when both wasn’t working. I was putting in the full settings, including TLS and without, both of which my email server accepts.

Test Email on Sendmail and PHP.Mail didn’t work, but I didn’t test them with running a job, unlike the other settings.

It’s odd that it worked when I switched it to using the ‘Site Settings’ – and used my own server. I suspect it’s now using the ‘Configure SMTP’ plugin settings…

@jan: No, the setting of other Plugin would not ingenored. It trys to convert them for SwiftMailer or you can set you own.

@timbearcub: In sending of Test mails is a bug. Only sending in a job, in moment, working correctly. You can use the Version from https://github.com/inpsyde/backwpup ther it is fixed.
