    Hi,

I’m a long time user and fan of this plug in but I just realized that I haven’t successfully completed a backup since May 2016.

I can’t seem to complete either a file nor a database backup manually. No Error message is shown, it just shows that it is working and then refreshes the page and the backup never appears.

I need to back up before making a critical update to my eCommerce site which is hurting me so I would appreciate it you could help me troubleshoot this issue.

    Many Thanks.

    Ben

Hey – looks like the issue is PHP Execution time out. I’m on a shared plan with HostGator. They said there is nothing they can do about it. Seems like a fairly common error. Do you have any advice?

    Thanks

    Hey there –

Do you know what the time out is set to? Usually if that is the only issue, database backups will still work ??

If you can enable support on your site, you can copy and paste information about your server here (just use “xxx” if there is any identifying URLs or anything you don’t want to appear). To do that, go to the BackUpWordPress admin page on your site and click the “Enable Support” button at the top of that page. When you click to enable support, you’ll then be able to copy and paste that server information. If it doesn’t pop up in a small window for you to copy and paste, then go to the top of that page and click on the small “Help” tab on the righthand side of the top of the page. From the dropdown, click on the “Server” section, where all the information should be listed and able to be copied and pasted. Let me know if you have trouble with that.

That should give us a bit more information to see if there is anything else on the server going on. I’d also like to have you check, as you said you were on Hostgator – usually they allow edits of the php.ini file on that host, which would be how you can increase your max_execution_time as well as other variables – can you investigate whether you are able to do that?

Let me know what you find!

    Hey thanks for the response.

The database backups are working now – I didn’t change anything but they are completing.

max_execution_time = 30 on hostgator and they will not allow us to change it for the shared hosting plan that I am on. bummer.

I never had an issue with this limit before. Seems like there isn’t a solution. ??

Okay – I’ve been able to help a few users with low timeout limits by having them look at splitting up the backups further. Try reading this article and let me know if you have questions or need more details, okay? -> https://bwp.hmn.md/support-center/troubleshooting/splitting-backup-workload/

I usually start by splitting up the database and the files, then I split the files with the wp-content/uploads/ directory excluded fully. Then I see if JUST the wp-content/uploads directory will backup (so exclude everything else, on a separate new schedule that is files-only). If it won’t (and it won’t always), then drill down by year and separate the years as needed with exclusions as well. The article will give you more details but the idea is to allow the backups to be as big as possible but still be able to complete.

Again, check back in if you have additional questions, okay?
