After performing a web directory restoration, an error message appears in Backup Archives section and my Total Upkeep backup files are not there. It says:
“There has been a critical error on your website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions.”

I did not receive an admin email and my hosting provider said as below:
“The restore process just brings back the web directory of a domain to a previous point so if any backups were there before they would be there now. If the Plugin is not reflecting it would be best to check with them directly as to what could be occurring”

I do have the backup file I need saved locally if that is needed, but there were more files saved via the plugin so I wonder if they all can be recovered.

This is the log to my last backup if needed:

Hi @agoza, I’m sorry to hear about the issues you’re having. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this.

This first thing I’d like to do is just verify that I understand the situation.

You’ve stated “after restoring work server from hosting panel” and “performing a web directory restoration“. Did you restore your website from a backup using Total Upkeep, or did you restore your website from a hosting control panel such as cPanel or Softaculous?

Based on your log file, your Total Upkeep backup directory is “/home/dh_zb8yaq/boldgrid_backup/“. If you’re missing any Total Upkeep backup files, they should be in that directory.

Your hosting provider said, “If the Plugin is not reflecting it would be best to check with them directly as to what could be occurring“… If your backups are not in “/home/dh_zb8yaq/boldgrid_backup/“, I would ask if your hosting provider can search for any “.zip” files in your hosting account. It could be that the backup directory use to be one thing, but then it was changed by someone – and when the restoration happened it reverted the backup directory? Your hosting provider should be able to run a simple command to search for .zip / backup files.

I hope this helps. Please keep us updated.

    Thanks,
    – Brad

Thanks for the explanation Brad. After the recent update 1.13.5, I can now see some backup files including the one that I needed.

Before we mark this as resolved, I want to ask something about the process of uploading a backup file. I encountered an error with the download link method. Both Dropbox and Google Drive direct download links gave me this error message:
“Could not reach the URL address. HTTP error: 403 (error)”. I tested in my browser and they worked as direct download links. The file size is ~69MB. What should I have done differently?

    Hi @agoza,

I want to ask something about the process of uploading a backup file. I encountered an error with the download link method. Both Dropbox and Google Drive […]

When you talk about the “download link” method, are you talking about the “Get Download Link” feature on Total Upkeep? I wanted to verify because you mentioned DropBox, but Total Upkeep does not have any DropBox support just yet.

Could not reach the URL address. HTTP error: 403 (error)

The 403 error is a “Forbidden” error, usually meaning you need to login first before trying to access something. The download links are usually only valid for 1 hour. If you’re trying the links within that valid timeframe, and Google / Dropbox cannot access them, your server may be blocking Google / Dropbox. Your hosting provider can review logs to determine if this is actually happening.

The file size is ~69MB. What should I have done differently?

We have a 3 minute video about transferring a site using the, “Get Download link”. If you have a few minutes to watch, it’ll show how the feature was designed to be used – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfL6mrdB4nA – I’m not actually sure how you’re using that download link with Dropbox / Google Drive.

    Thanks,
    – Brad

Okay so I went straight to the Upload tab, because I already have a .zip file ready in my local hard drive. Perhaps because it felt more intuitive that way I had skipped a few steps including the download link process.

So after clicking the “Upload Backup” button, in Backups tab there will be 2 options to upload my backup files, and on top it says “Upload a Backup Archive”. I attempted to link external links (Google Drive & Dropbox) but I didn’t know that I needed a Download Link from BoldGrid. Hope it helps you understand my user experience.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

I’m sorry about the confusion, but I really appreciate you sharing your point of view! It’s very enlightening to see things the way you saw them. I took note of this in a GitHub issue – https://github.com/BoldGrid/boldgrid-backup/issues/291 – Either myself or another developer can improve on this UI soon.

    Thanks again!
