My weekly backups have not successfully completed for the last two weeks.

Sometimes it completed unsuccessfully, and sent me an email to that effect.
Other times it just didn’t complete at all.

My first question is, when it doesn’t complete at all, is it still running, and taking up resources? Is there any way to abort it? When the backup first starts, there’s a link to stop it, but that goes away at some point.

When I’ve gone ahead and started a new backup after that, I sometimes get a message that there’s already one running. Is it actually running, or is there a leftover file that hasn’t been deleted?

I’m asking because I want to make sure it’s not still taking up resources, and is it ok to start another one? The backup normally takes less than two hours, but after 4 hours had not completed.

For instance, this morning I started one at 9:11, and it still hasn’t completed at 6:58 pm. If I start another one, with either a smaller split size (current is 400mb) or just backing up the database. The only file that has been created so far is a .tmp file for the plugins zip file.

Are there any files I should delete before trying to start a new backup? Anything else I should do?

    Wordpress 6.0, memory limit 500M, split size 400mb, php 7.3.11, mysql 5.6.34-79.1
Yes, I know the php is old. The hosting platform is not upgrading the grid service, so the site needs to be move to another platform.
Backups on other sites with this host are completing ok, but they’re smaller sites.

I get these warnings, but on successful backups as well:
2705.836 (7) PHP event: code E_WARNING: mysqli_query(): MySQL server has gone away (line 2169, wp-includes/wp-db.php)
    2706.236 (7) PHP event: code E_WARNING: mysqli_query(): Error reading result set’s header (line 2169, wp-includes/wp-db.php)

On the ones where I received an email that they completed successfully, I got:

5760.000 (19) [Updraftplus] The backup is being aborted for a repeated failure to progress.
5760.001 (19) An error condition has occurred for the first time during this job
    5760.002 (19) [Info] Lock option (updraft_lock_16411d8c389c, wp_options) released
5760.003 (19) Fetching RSS news feed
5760.887 (19) Fetched RSS news feed; result is a: SimplePie
5760.950 (19) Sending email ('Incomplete') report (attachments: 1, size: 1886.5 KB) to: xxx...
5763.135 (19) The backup attempt has finished, apparently unsuccessfully

Should my next step be to run a test backup for just the database, or to decrease the split limit? Do I need to do anything to make sure the last one that has not completed is aborted, or will the new one just overwrite anything it needs to?

Oh, also, I had tried to update the UpdraftPlus plugin, and it failed “500 Internal Server Error”. I don’t know if that was when the backup had not stopped running.

I don’t dare try to update anything else until this is resolved and I have a good backup.

  • I would like to second this question. I’m trying to back up my client’s website as well to Amazon s3, but it keeps getting stuck less than halfway.
The last log i usually receive looks something like this :

0033.210 (0) finding files: wpallimport: adding to list (63)
    0033.210 (0) finding files: wpallimport_history: adding to list (64)
    0033.210 (0) finding files: wpallimport_logs: adding to list (65)
    0033.210 (0) finding files: wpseo-redirects: adding to list (66)
0033.210 (0) Beginning creation of dump of uploads (split every: 400 MB)

    after that, it stops moving

    Hi,

Could you try to reduce the backup archive split size. This will split the backup into smaller, more manageable files.

To do this, open the ‘expert settings’ section of the UpdraftPlus Settings tab, and find the ‘split backups every’ option. Set this to 25Mb save your settings and run a new process.

    Thanks,
    Bryle

Thanks for your reply. I will try that.

Can you tell me, if the last backup has not completed, is there anything I need to clear out before making another backup. Is it still running, or does it stop at some point?

    Hi,

The last log you sent me is not complete and I cannot exactly tell if that completed or not. Please copy all the content of the log to https://pastebin.com/ and share to us the link here.

    Thanks,

The log will not be complete if it never finished. My question is, if it doesn’t finish, either successfully or unsuccessfully, what state is it in? Does it eventually just stop, or is there a process still running? If it’s been hours with no completion message, does anything need to be “cleaned up” before starting a new backup?

    Hi,

UpdraftPlus will keep on trying until it would eventually stop or halted by your server. It has been designed to be dependent on your server resources. You can delete the incomplete backups just to make sure there is more than enough space on your server for new backups.

    Thanks,

Ok, so I reduced the split limit to 25mb. Started a new backup at 7:17.

The backup got further than before, but did not complete, and did not send me a message. db, other, plugins, themes and some upload zip files were created, and some uploaded to where I have them stored (1-61), but other uploads were created but not uploaded to storage.

    The last message received was
    Googledrive chunked upload: 60.5 % uploaded (15728640 – increasing chunk size to 16384 KB – memory usage: 55.8 / 59) (Jun 09 08:34:41) that’s where it sits, over 5 hours later.

Note that I have changed the site name for security purposes.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I was able to create a backup of the database only, and it uploaded to remote storage successfully.

So, I ran a backup of all except uploads, and that was also successful.

Split is still at 25 mB.

Oddly, after the database only backup, the Backup/Restore page no longer showed the database backup for the oldest remote set, even though it actually was still there in remote storage. I guess there was a delay in the delete, because after the backup of all but uploads, I checked the remote storage again, and only the uploads for the oldest set remain.

    Hi,

If that is the case, then it appears that your server is not able to handle large backups. Uploads component usually compose 80% of the entire backup. In most cases, increasing your serve I/O limit, maximum_execution_time and site memory will resolve the issue.

    Thanks,
    Bryle

Ugh, sorry to have wasted your time and mine. Since the offsite storage looked like it had plenty of space, only about 10 GB used of 15, for 3 previous backups, I didn’t check that aspect. It turns out that there wasn’t enough space, but there was no error message generated by UpdraftPlus saying it couldn’t upload the files. Should there have been?
