    Hi,
I think I have a false positive being flagged by WordFence as malicious. It’s a BackupBuddy .dat file which matches the name of a backup which was done in Feb.
Is there anyway to check if its a false positive?
    Thanks.

  • I would like to know as well. Is this real or just a false positive????

Me, too. Looks to me like it’s just picking up a valid text pattern in the backup but I’d like to know for certain.

I now have a number of sites where a BackupBuddy .dat file is being flagged as malicious.

    Hey @elainewildash and All,

This is likely a false positive and safe to ignore. However, if you’d like to share the file we’d be happy to review it for you. If so, you can send it to [email protected]. Please title the subject attn: gerroald and update this thread.

    Thanks,

    Hi Gerroald,

I have sent an email as instructed with a link to the.dat file.

    Thanks.

iThemes support team told me it’s a legitimate file. I emailed a screenshot. They are so responsive!

so we are good to go?

    Hi @lazykins, @jo1st, @elainewildash,

Wordfence reports any file that does not exist in a default WordPress installation as cautionary. These files generated by BackupBuddy are a false positive and you can safely ignore these cases within Wordfence.

    Dave

The .dat files you are seeing in the same location as the local backups created by BackupBuddy are legitimate files used for the new “Restore Backup” feature (from within the WordPress dashboard) which is done directly within the site on the BackupBuddy -> Backups -> Restore Backup tab.

The .dat files enable additional restore features and are used to quickly get information about local and remote backup files when using the new “Restore Backup” feature.

If the .dat files are causing an issue, you can always disable them here:
    wp-admin (dashboard) -> BackupBuddy -> Settings -> Advanced Settings/Troubleshooting -> Technical & Server Compatibility -> Disable .dat file creation

By checking that option then saving the settings.

But doing so, may keep restores from working as effectively when using that new “Restore Backup” feature from within the WordPress dashboard. So please keep that in mind.
