Hey, got a major problem with my site not accepting the uploaded backup file.

I can link the log and a screenshot of the error.

    The backup log. https://textdoc.co/Yu9fp57nwZl4KxTH

The current website site information. https://textdoc.co/5m2WI1tJEdNjyxoa

So here’s the problem. I don’t have the old site anymore, I just did a host transfer after doing the backup. And when it transferred to the new host, it was a mess, so I deleted it and assumed that the entire site backup that I had made with the Backup Migration plugin wouldn’t brick on me. But it has.

I have the .rar file and I can browse through it all and see the uploads, content etc…but when the file finishes uploading in order to ‘restore backup’ – I simply get this error – https://imgur.com/a/5Dlmf1h

Any help here would be so greatly appreciated, I’m freaking out.

Tried using your temp site creator https://tastewp.com/ to upload the backup there, but the same exact error occurred. Any help here would be great!

    Hi @tmhsupport

This error usually mean, that the backup is not valid and can’t be used for restoration. You have created the backup with PHP CLI, some hosting providers modifies this executable to block certain things, it may also mess up with our compression methods.

The other reason could be some binary-broken file, which was included in the backup. For such case we have alternate backup method.

Please, always confirm that your backup is restorable. You can simply do this by going to “Manage & Restore Backup(s)” tab. If you see your backup here, then it’s valid – the same validation method is used during upload.

If you can see the backup file but after download it still says that it’s broken.
It may be caused by unfinished download of file.
    Solution for this case:
On the site where you made the backup:
    1. Go to our plugin settings and open “Other options” section
    2. Enable alternate download method: https://prnt.sc/1slr41w
    3. Save that section
    – No need to make new backup

But if you don’t see your backup file on the list, you need to make new one:

Adjust settings on the site where you made the backup:
Please open first section of the plugin named: “What will be backed up?”
Find subsection named: “Exclude by folder / file name (case-sensitive)”
Here add these three rules, like on image: https://prnt.sc/9oftADPd_Z7e

Once you do that, please follow these steps:
    1. Go to “Other options” section
    2. Enable alternate download method: https://prnt.sc/1slr41w (just in case)
    3. Change backup method: https://prnt.sc/1s1ofpa
    4. Disable PHP CLI checking: https://prnt.sc/1sljr31
    5. Modify query output: https://prnt.sc/1trxucl (set this value to 100)
    6. Save “Other options” section
    7. Force stop both processes: https://prnt.sc/1trv1tm
    – After that you do that make new backup

Double check if the backup is now visible on the list, if so, you can process with the restoration on server of your choice.

Let me know if that solves your issue ??
    Thank you!

Thank you so much for the quick response.

I have a real problem with this though, the site hosting was just transferred so I no longer have access to the original site that was backed up. All I have right now is the backup file that the plugin generated on my local computer (that I can access and see there’s all the pictures and the structure is similar).

Have I just nuked my company’s site and relied on a broken backup file this entire time thinking it was going to restore without issue? Is there any way to modify of salvage part of the site using the downloaded backup I have?

It said the backup was a success, so I downloaded the file and the log … both I have.

    Hi @tmhsupport

If you see only WordPress directory in the archive, there is no database.
Which means you can restore only files, all settings or pages etc. are not included.

Also you mentioned that you have RAR file, our plugin does not create RAR files – only ZIP one.

If your previous site expired recently, you may try to ask your hosting provider for some backup too. Most providers keep files of removed services up to 30 days.

I am just curious, why you waited with the migration, couldn’t you do that before your previous site expired?

Hope that can help, but without valid backup I can’t help.
    – Unless it contain database, then we can play around with it.

    Hey @iclyde

When I open the BM_Backup zip file (sorry for saying .rar, it was a .zip) – The root is only wordpress, no other folder, once in the wordpress folder it contains the various files like .well-known, wp-admin etc. So I think that’s me out of luck then?

The site was migrated from one host to another (squarespace to bluehost), and in the process of doing so it got all messed up, so I nuked it and went to reinstall / upload everything again. I have login info and can still access the old host account, maybe I can try contacting them and see if they can somehow help?

As for why I waited? First time migration error I guess, never done this before.

If there’s nothing else you can do, then thank you for your time and patience. Lesson learnt.

If you have any other advice, I’m all ears.

    All the best.

    Hi @tmhsupport

    Sorry to hear that.

As I can see you’ve made the backup as 03-06-2022, so, ask them for latest database backup. I don’t know what was messed up with the process, but if it was only WordPress issue, it may be possible that your database is still untouched on their hosting.

With database dump, I can help you combine your current files with database, which should allow you to restore properly.

Let me know once you get something, fingers crossed.
    Thank you!

Thanks for your help so far.

I’m going to just re-write the site since I actually cannot gain access to the original host anymore. Thought I could, sadly I cannot.

Really, thanks for all the help. I’ll be more careful in the future!
