This plugin was updated as soon as there was a update available automatically. It is currently at 1.24.1 on 2 WordPress sites. Both are using the free version of the software. The last email I got from either site was back in May 2024. There were no further emails until today when I got an email whose subject was

Backed up: website name (UpdraftPlus 1.24.1) 2024-02-23 16:48

The thing is that unless you read the body of the email you would assume the website had been backed up. It had not! The message in part said the following:

Backup contains: Unknown/unexpected error – please raise a support request

Latest status: UpdraftPlus is unable to perform backups as your backup directory is not writable or the disk space is full. Please check the backup directory and ensure it is writable so that backups may continue.

I had to click on a link in the plugin which fixed the issue or at least a manually initiated backup ran fine. My question is what the heck was this plugin doing since May 2022?

Thankfully I have backups via another pluging but geez.

  • Hello,

Thank you for drawing the email issue to our attention, I will do some testing on this and see if we can make it more obvious with better messaging. In terms of why your backups were not functioning for this period of time it’s difficult to say. Do you have any error log files from this period of time?

There are no log files that I can see except for the log files from the manually run backup. The existing backups shows May 13, 2022 as the last backup until Feb 23, 2023, I received that previously mentioned email. Up until then, I received nothing. These backups were being stored on DropBox if that helps.

    The email you have suggests that either;

    1. The directory wp-content/updraft is not writeable (you may have changed it from the default of updraft in Settings >> Show expert settings (the correct permissions should be 755)
    2. There is not enough space on your hosting to make the backup.

Can you check both of these things.

Again there was a link provided in the plugin which fixed the issue on Dropbox for both of these sites. I was able to do an on-demand backup and one site even ran a scheduled backup. The other side is scheduled to do one on March 1st.

My point is what the bleep was this plugin doing for almost 2 years? Why was it not at least sending out emails showing failed backup attempts due to destination issues?

It’s difficult to say without your logs. If the backups were not running, it was most like an issue with your site scheduler. In which case you get an email if the backup started and did not complete but not if the backup never started (which may have been the case with your backups)

It is strange that other security plugin had no issue performing its backup nor did the auto updater. The thing is that I go that poorly worded email that mentioned Successfully backuped up when it wasn’t right after the Updraft plugin was automatically updated. I did nothing to either of those websites.

If you want to post any backup logs (please do this using a tool such as pastebin.com) I would be more than happy to check any current install for an issues or potential issues?

As far as I can tell me doing the manual backup with the latest version wiped out all of the other backup logs. The applicaiton only allows me to download a single log or is the log file simply appened to with each job’s output?

You get a log per backup but you can keep as many backups/log as you like (as per the retention rules in the settings tab)

There is only an option to view log for the manually run job from last week. In this logfile it shows in part

    0000.054 (0) Deleting old log file: log.1f5c42a6c29f.txt

    0000.055 (0) Deleting old log file: log.4eebbf02469b.txt

    0000.056 (0) Deleting old log file: log.5ba5e68915eb.txt

    0000.057 (0) Deleting old log file: log.dcf72a9f4119.txt

In other words there are no other log files to view even though its set to keep 4 backups and it shows 3 almost 2 year old backup plus the manually run one from last week.

The log files are deleted when the backups are pruned or deleted.

Schedule some backups and send me the logs from these and I can check is ok. You are also very welcome to send us logs to check at any point in the future. We will look at any logs that are posted and let you know if there is anything you need to know.
