I am using WordPress 6.1.1 on LightSpeed server and AIO Security 5.1.4. When I go to:

WP Security -> Settings -> .htaccess file

and click on the button “Backup .htaccess file” the error page from the web server is 403. The backup file also is not created in the filesystem of my hosting plan. I think that some security function is preventing access to this file, but I don’t know which one exactly.

It does not matter if the “Enable basic firewall protection” option is enabled or disabled. In both cases, the error page is 403, when I click the button. Before several days I was able to download the file and it was created in the filesystem, but now this function is not working.

    Hi @wpjetusr2244

In recent release of AIOS how .htacess backup works has not changed. So more it seems security issue.

Can you please try enable log ? go to WP Security > Settings > General Settings tab > check Enable debug log and save.

Then perform .htaccess backup form WP Security > Settings > .htaccess file.

From WP Security > Dashborad > Logs in dubug logs do you see any thing there.

Issue should be either .htacess can not be read or wp-content/aiowps_backups can not be written to create the backup file.

I have done these steps, but the Debug log was empty after several tries to backup the .htaccess file. Also the server error 403 was the same. The access rights of the /wp-content/ directory is 755 and this is OK.

There is some possibility that the hosting company protection system is stopping this operation. There are no real .htaccess file in the filesystem and the php script that creates it on the fly, is blocked maybe by the protection system of the hosting.

I will continue the check the plugins, in order to be sure that they are not the problem.

I found the cause of the problem. It is the ModSecurity protection module for the WEB server. When I disable this option, .htaccess file backup is working as expected. I will leave the protection ON and hope that AIO Security plugin is working also.

    Hi @wpjetusr2244

Glad to know you found the cause of problem. .htaccess rule sholud be working with Mod security.

You may test firewall functionality Firewall > Prevent Image hotlinks and try add it to another website it will not should not show that image if access from another website.

    Regards
