Backorder email notifications not working

I have ‘enable stock management at product level’ activated, and ‘allow [backorders] but notify customer’ – however customers are definitely not getting backorder notification emails (although it does say it clearly on the product listing, they are obviously incapable of taking any notice!) I put a test order through myself and had the usual order confirmation email, but not a specific back order one. I’ve been trawling the good old net to no avail. Any idea how I fix this without an extra plugin???
