• Hi.
I want to backup my blog for two reasons: 1) it’s the right thing to do ?? and 2) so that I can get the new version of All In One SEO.

I understand that the backup plugins only backup the database. I want the theme backed up, too. That way, presumably, I can go to a backup and get everything back and functional right away (in the event of trouble).

What should I use, or what approach should I take? I saw something called Backup Buddy, but haven’t heard of it before. Does anyone recommend it, or something else?

    Thanks,
    Scott

Oh, wait, that’s $45. Didn’t notice that before. Oh, well, any free plugins that can do the tasks that I described?

DBC Backup will backup your database:

You can backup your theme by simply downloading wp-content/themes/theme_name to your own computer using FTP into your site (or whatever file management application your host provides).

    Hi esmi, thanks for posting.
Right now I have WP Database Backup and it works pretty good. My database is pretty small, I was thinking that it should be bigger. I scheduled it to email me twice a day.

I was under the impression that I could schedule the themes and plugins, too. I already have them archived on my Mac and FW drive. I archive all new plugins that I download.

    Thanks!

Yes, you are right. when everything is working fine, the best thing to do is make a backup.

The xml backup you already know, i suggest you to do a sql back up as well from the phpmyadmin.

about the theme backup. just follow the above advice of ftp. Get a free ftp application and simply download your theme files. I download the rest of the wordpress files too, it is not important though.

    Thanks healthvotes.
For FTP, I’ve been using Transmit (from panic Software, Mac-only) for years. I love it. Works great.

OK, here’s where I’m confused now. I can go to Tools/Backup… and download a table. It has the name of the database that was setup when I installed WP. it has the database name and ends with .sql. That, I believe is the MySQL database. Right?

So what is the XML backup?

That, I believe is the MySQL database. Right?

It’s the content from your database with instructions for setting a replica up if needed.

So what is the XML backup?

Tools/Export. Allows you to move your content from one WP site to another via an xml file. Bear in mind that this will be pure content – no settings, theme or plugins data.
