• My website is currently running on WordPress, with the woocommerce plugin. I’m preparing to move my shop to another ecommerce platform (Big commerce), and I need to redirect my URL to that new shop. I don’t want to shut down hosted WordPress dashboard just yet, as I need to be able to access my WordPress user database or Woocommerce order history.

My webhost has been largely unhelpful in pointing me in the right direction, which is one of the reasons I’m moving my shop, and will eventually be closing my hosting account with them. Since WordPress isn’t their software, they refuse to even make a suggestion beyond “ask WordPress, it’s their software.”

Can you help? What steps do I need to take to be able to access my WordPress Dashboard and order history for a few months, while still redirecting my domain name to my new BigCommerce shop?

Thank you so much for your expertise!

  • Quite routine.
When you want to activate public access to the bigcommerce site you change the nameserver settings in your domains’s DNS settings. Then you maintain access to the WordPress site on the present server by putting its IP address against your domain name in your “hosts” file, details on the hosts file here:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_(file)

This way the world uses the standard internet DNS system to find your bigcommerce website, while your own computer evades the DNS system and uses the manual settings in the hosts file. You can turn the hosts file entries on and off by commenting out the lines with a # to enable and disable your access to the old site.

Prior to going live with the bigcommerce site you can enable your access to it by using the hosts file settings.
