• I am backing up my site with FileZilla and have recently received the error message: File name is too long (1003 files). These files are for a custom theme and the NexGen gallery. Does anyone know what is the best way to handle this problem?
    Thanks.

When you say “backup with FileZilla”, I assume you mean that you’re downloading your site via FTP. Just FYI, that does not back up the database, which is a critical component

This is an issue with FileZilla and not WordPress.

You might consider using a backup plugin to combine all files and the database into a single archive to download. There is a large number of such plugins in the plugin repository.

    Steve,

I thought that a FTP download WAS a backup. That is disappointing. Well it is good to know that I have to find a plugin to backup the website asap.

    Thanks a ton.

    Thanks for the recommendation Steve.

I tried it. The site is 13 MB but the backup is 1 MB. Does this sound correct? I guess there is some compression involved but that is a big difference.

BTW can you explain why a download from FileZilla is not a backup method?

Your website is two parts: Stuff in the file system (php code, image files) and content (stored in the database). You need both.

Download the file and unzip it. Do you see everything?
