What is background printing? And could it be the cause of my automatic printing not working?

So I set everything up with Google Cloud, did a test at home with a different printer to the real one we’ll be using (same model). Everything worked perfect.

I then change the location to the restaurant printer. This time, I test remotely without the laptop next to printer. Nothing.

It seems that the only thing I haven’t checked with my host is background printing. But I can’t find any information on it other than “Print Optimization – Hosting Providers May Block Background Printing”

When I ask my host if they are blocking background printing, they are clueless. Do you have any more info I can get to them to understand what this is to investigate?

Or could this be something else?

    Thanks!

Thanks for reaching out to us.

Based upon the behavior you described, I don’t think it’s related to background printing. The use for background printing is mainly for stores using multiple printers and at checkout that can add a few seconds to load the thank you confirmation page. Background printing saves temporarily on your hosted directory until the print job is complete. This is why we say a hosting provider might block that temporary save event by a plugin.

Going to the issue specifically. One thing that caught our attention in your comments. “I then change the location to the restaurant printer. This time, I test remotely without the laptop next to printer. Nothing.”

The print plugin and overall print system uses Google Cloud Print a cloud based system. The printer at the restaurant, how is it connected to the internet to receive print jobs? If you removed the connection to the laptop, more than likely the printer is not receiving the print job, unless the printer is cloud ready on wifi or other connection to the internet.

If you used the same printer model before and it worked, I don’t suspect it’s the settings being misconfigured, I suspect it could be related to the restaurant printer not receiving the print job due to no connection. We’d recommend leaving the laptop which is connected to the internet next to the printer, using a cloud ready wifi printer, or a Raspberry Pi Print Server to maintain a connection to the internet for the printer. This is needed for it to function and send print jobs based upon the orders being received.

I’ll close this support post, but if we have misunderstood that comment and the restaurant printer does have an internet connect. Please reopen the support forum post and feel free to send us the log file, we’d be happy to review. The part we are unable to verify is if the printer is online and able to receive print jobs, that will be something since you are local to the printer will need to make sure is not occurring. The log will not show that data about online connection status.

    I hope this helps!

My wordpress site says not enabled and to ask my host but it’s my server..what do you have to change on the server to enable background print. I can not seem to find the answer anywhere online..

For background printing to be enabled, the plugin saves a temporary file in the plugin directory. You will need to verify that plugin folder can be written to for the background printing to be enabled.
