Background Color

Hey everyone. Not too savvy with wordpress. Working on a website and the background color is giving me a hard time. I change the color in the stylesheet but nothing happens. Sometimes it does change when I put in a random color to test it out. Then I try to change it to the color I actually want and nothing happens.
I need help…. desperately.
