After activating the plugin, the fonts in wp-admin become a bit blurry.

WordPress 4.8 + Twenty Seventeen Version: 1.3 + NO other plugins.
Site on HTTPS and with HTTP Basic Auth.

Haven’t investigated, but it seems to mess with the font loading.

After deactivating the plugin, things go back to normal.

  • Hey @hussong,

That’s first time I’m hearing such an issue with Smush. Do you happen to have any other site, on which you can install smush and check with?

    Thanks, Umesh

Yes, I’ve just checked on a completely different server with WP 4.8, a zillion plugins and Storefront theme: same behavior.

Looks like this is an edge case with some clients (I’m using Chromium on Ubuntu), that’s triggered by something in the admin styles you’re enqueueing.

    What happens after plugin activation:
    1. admin screens render in a different font
    2. any bold text looks blurry.
    Here’s a screenshot.

I’ve looked at the styles, and with your plugin on, “Rendered Fonts” changes
from Ubuntu — Local file (11 glyphs) (my system font)
to Roboto Medium — Network resource (9 glyphs) (a web font).
And then a 600 font weight on the Roboto Medium probably doesn’t render good.

Same rendering issue in Firefox btw. Could be that it only affects Ubuntu / Linux users, not sure.

It’s no big deal really, I just thought I’d mention this (and it piqued my curiosity ??

I’ll get it tested on Ubuntu to see if the issue can be replicated. Else I’d need your help to check this.

    Sure, happy to help ??

I dug a little deeper and can confirm that this happens in all browsers (Chromium, Firefox, Google Chrome) on Ubuntu AND also on Android (Chrome, Firefox) — it’s a little less noticeable there, but still visible.

Any bold text in wp-admin has more font weight (I’d guess 100 to 200 more) with the Smush plugin enabled, which makes the text a bit blurry.

Here are some screenshots on Android: https://www.dropbox.com/s/scjysdffqh56hur/smush-screenshots.zip

It might even be visible on Win/Mac, probably much less obvious because the font rendering doesn’t go to shit when the text gets little bit bolder.

I seem to recall seeing the same effect a year or two ago with a different plugin, but I didn’t care at the time (it was a crappy plugin anyway and went out the window right away) and don’t remember any details.

    Hello @hussong,

I’m right now on Ubuntu and I can see the issue. To be honest I noticed it just now, after reading this thread :).
I will let developers know about result of my test.

    kind regards,

    Hello @iuriem,

Yes, we have this reported to developers, from what I see they have possible fix prepared for next version (it needs to pass tests before it will be implemented).

    kind regards,
    Kasia

@wpmudev-support2 Thank you! After activation the plugin is displaying a message at the top of the modules page. When I closed this message the issue disappeared.
