I tried to do the automatic update to 3.8 but it started the process then stopped with several messages about permissions (I didn’t write them down). So I downloaded 3.8 then FTPed the files to my site. I had no problems with the upload, but when I logged back in my entire back everything shows with borders only — no fills. So when I click something in the left column it opens but sometimes I can’t see what’s available to click because without a fill the text just overlaps the text in the right hand column so I sometimes can’t read what’s there.

My site still performs normally, but the back end is just about unusable. Is there any way I can upload a screen shot?

  • Brenda,

Perhaps on your last manual install something didn’t get replaced correctly. Can you try manually re-installing WordPress again? To do this, download the latest version of WordPress, unzip it, and then FTP into your site and replace all files and folders *except* wp-config.php and the wp-content folder (and sub-folders).

If this still doesn’t solve the issue – go to your plugins and themes folders and disable all plugins and themes (except for twenty-thirteen or twenty-fourteen, default WordPress themes.) You can do this by renaming individual plugin/theme folder with “-old” at the end.

Then you can carefully work your way through troubleshooting by carefully re-enabling themes and see if the issue returns. If so, it means that last enabled theme doesn’t work well with 3.8.

If all the themes work okay, you can go through the same process with plugins. Carefully re-enable them one by one until the issue returns. If the issue returns, identify which plugin was the last one you enabled and contact the plugin developer with information about your setup and how to reproduce the issue.

During the FTP I had 6 failed transfers. The information given was

    Could not start transfer
    /public_html/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-upgrader-skins.php
    /public_html/wp-includes/date.php
    /public_html/wp-includes/js/zxcvbn-async.js
    /public_html/wp-includes/certificates/ca-bundle.crt
    /public_html/wp-includes/js/zxcvbn-async.min.js
    /public_html/wp-includes/js/zxcvbn.min.js

These appear to be the same files that failed when I first tried the automatic upgrade.

Did you delete the old versions of those files before uploading new ones?

No, I’ll go try than right now

Well, that seemed to have done it. I couldn’t replace /public_html/wp-includes/certificates/ca-bundle.crt because I couldn’t delete the old version and I couldn’t overwrite it. But everything seems to be as it should be.

So thank you bemdesign and for your help,

    That line should have been:
So thank you bemdesign and WPyogi for your help,

    LOL – you’re welcome :)!

    Thanks WPyogi

you spared me lots of head banging!

Reinstalling manually solved this sudden malfunctioning of WP3.8, not accepting uploads and plugin installation failures.

    Have a nice holiday!
