Averaging custom fields

  • I have a custom field associated with each post that is just a number, like grade: 4 … what I need to do is grab all the posts in a partcular category and average all the grades… I am new to WP and the DB set-up seems so bizarre so I am having a hard time figuring out how to take the category ID > find all the posts associated with that ID and then trak down all the grades…

    any thoughts?
