• “Gravatar doesn’t have any pre-made avatars to choose from” https://en.gravatar.com/emails/ Nonsense. I just started my blog and I have a grotesquely ugly avatar following me around. I most certainly did not create this hideous thing, and as many posters before me have noted, there is no way to change or get rid of it in the dashboard. You HAVE to go to gravatar. So when I saw this flat out lie on the page at Gravatar, I had to post a comment. It is my own small protest.

Here’s a question: Since gravatar obviously knows who I am – I was able to log in without registering and there is an accurate profile which presumably I wrote – and I had my own picture on my wordpress.com site, why isn’t that what is following me around? Clearly they made this ugly thing so as to accelerate the use of gravatar. Shame on you.

  • Did you make a WordPress.com account at some point, even just for a API key?

“It’s possible that you registered a WordPress.com account (either for a blog or for an Akismet API key,) which automatically now gives you a Gravatar.com account.”

Yes, that is correct. I had a wordpress.com blog (the same one I just moved to my new www.remarpro.com install) and I did have to get an API key, I remember that. But I don’t remember, and certainly would never have chosen, that ghastly thing I saw yesterday. For whatever reason, I note that after I posted this complaint I started getting a much more generic mostly blue design which was at least not objectionable, and therefore a major improvement. Now I have put my own picture up – at least for now.
