automatically open the first image

I do not really understand your question.

There is no option to open the first image automatically. “Activate browser history” is named “Update browser history” and can be found in the “General” tab. Also see here:

I am really confused. It’s just in the plugin’s description:

When you activate the setting for “Activate browser history” you can link directly to an image inside a page or post:
https://domain.example/example-page#gid=1&pid=1
This will load the given page/post and automatically open the first image (pid=1) in the lightbox.

Yes – this is an example about how this works and there is nothing about “first image” at all. Where did you read that this option will always open the “first image”?

In fact this only means when you activate this option, the URL in the browser will be updated as soon as you open the lightbox. And this URL can then be used as a link to open this very image in the lightbox directly.

What do you mean by “Many websites work that way”? I don’t know any website where the first image in the website is opened automatically. Do you have a few examples for that?

Well – this is a link to a picture itself. You can do this with Photoswipe as well, like this:
