• This problem was also posted here. The original problem description is:
“I want comments to remain enabled on my posts indefinitely, but every once in a while I notice that comments are disabled on old posts. When I look in the WordPress settings, the “Automatically close comments on articles older than 28 days” option is checked. I uncheck it, to enable comments, but then it magically gets checked again later, perhaps during the next auto-update? I’ve even tried getting around this by changing the 28 to something larger but it resets to 28 as well.”
Like that poster, the troubleshooting option given in that post is, for me, unworkable. So, following the advice of the forum moderator I am creating this post.

  • One more comment – it seems to have started when WP upgraded to 4.8 I believe.

thanks for all posters, i have the same issue in some of my websites
i guess this happens by the Akismet to increase site security, because spammers look for posts that have high page authority and try to comment on with anchor like to get back link to their sites.
and it’s known in some big forums and in social media sites that any post should get engagement form users in the first 30 day from the article has posted, and then comments closed in that topic.

I have the same problem…..comments gets disabled after few days…even if I set disable comments after 100 days….nothing works…..

Most likely the reason is Bluehost. They close comments after some days on all of the wordpress sites they host. They probably do it to reduce load on their servers. Since there are a lot of spam comments. Bluehost, JustHost, Hostgator…all owned by same parent company.

This issue does not happen on sites hosted at Bluehost VPS.

    no NOT TRUE
what I have found is that bbpress plugin is creating this problem…..I have bbpress installed on two wp ites and both have their comments shut down…..
i have several other wp withotu bbpress and no problem
