Automatic Updates not working

  • The Update Automatically to 3.1.3 option generates the following error.

    Fatal error: Class ‘WP_Filesystem_direct’ not found in /usr/www/users/USERNAME/wordpress/wp-admin/includes/file.php on line 827

    (I’ve substituted the account name for USERNAME.)

    I’ve set all the files’ ownerships to USERNAME with permissions to 755, tried php-wrappers and root .htaccess file changes, but still receive the same error.

    What can I try next?

  • There is no WP_Filesystem_direct in WordPress. Try – re-uploading the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of your current version of WordPress.

    Can you please further explain how the Update Automatically option could possibly be referencing something which WordPress has no reference to?

    More importantly, how would I reupload the wp-admin and wp-includes folders from a fresh download of the my version of WordPress? I don’t quite understand your process.

    UsingFTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    Just had the same issue when moving an old site (v 2.8.2). It turn out to the a file that hadn’t transferred correctly.

    wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-direct.php

    It was empty. Re-uploading the full file from the original download solved the error. You can get past versions here BTW:
