• I upgraded two of my client’s WordPress installations to 2.7 last night. Today he noticed the message in the Dashboard saying we should upgrade to 2.7.1. Sheesh. So, I did my customary backup of files and dbs, then test drove the new Automatic Update feature. Here’s how that went:

I typed my FTP permissions into the form, then started the upgrade. The form on the upgrade page disappeared, and the browser gave no feedback after that. I waited about 15 minutes, then I ssh’d into the server and checked the creation dates of the folders. Sure enough, most had been changed to today’s date. I opened a NEW browser tab, logged into admin, went to Tools/Upgrade, and was informed that 2.7.1 was installed. I surfed the forums a bit to see if anyone else had a similar experience. Decided I’d post mine, plus a question at the end. Sorry, long post…

Whoa! Just now, the original tab with the upgrade page FINALLY completed loading. That took over 30 minutes. So, be patient folks… At any rate, the Auto Upgrade seems to have worked. Now for my question:

Are the FTP permissions that I typed into the form being stored anywhere? Either in the db or a php file? I’d hate, hate, hate to get hacked and have someone get those permissions.

  • My experience was that i see the unzipping 2.7.1 then nothing after that. Not even next morning.

I typed my FTP permissions into the form, then started the upgrade.

You’re the second person I’ve seen say something about this. I don’t get it. I clicked to upgrade. It asked me if I wanted to download the files or automatically upgrade. I clicked to auto upgrade and about 10 seconds later it was done. I was never asked for my FTP login info.

clicked to upgrade. It asked me if I wanted to download the files or automatically upgrade

I wasn’t even given this choice. I just clicked the upgrade link and let it save, followed by doing unzip, yet the upgrade link still there. Wonder why no one-click upgrade which once I had the privilege to use it.

Why is it so complicated? Thinking that signing up with a hosting co gives me convenience, yet…???

The latest stable release of WordPress (Version 2.7.1) is available in two formats from the links to your right. If you have no idea what to do with this download, we recommend signing up with one of our web hosting partners that offers a one click install of WordPress or getting a free account on WordPress.com.

This is what I mean. Does not my hosting co bluehost have this one click install?
